Impostor

by Darin Jellison

Released 2018
Released 2018
A musical diptych that contemplates the ups and downs of success.
NOTES
At times carefully planned, and other times extemporized, this music, through the songwriting and production phases, evolves to a completed whole that initially engages with personal introspection and transforms itself to share a feeling of hope. With modern synth sounds and electronic beats, this is probably the most "produced" track in my catalogue, and with an ending like this, probably one of the most fun and challenging to mix. But I still can't wait to …

Baritones 61.7

by Phil Circle

Released 2019
Guilt by Association Records
Released 2019
Guilt by Association Records
Heartfelt, almost meditative, often beautiful, at times gritty; a 23 minute story in five songs written and performed on baritone guitar and voice, with some light band accompaniment.
NOTES
Phil Circle's first official release was 25 years ago (1994). It was a four song EP and it took four days to record. Perhaps at an unconscious level a 25 year anniversary effort, this album was planned to take five days and include five songs. Well, there are actually seven tracks. Two of the tunes just begged for an analog version to be heard.

Phil bought a baritone guitar in the summer of 2018. To most guitarists with 30+ years …

Play

by Darin Jellison

Released 2016
Released 2016
I think, I write, I play and sing.
NOTES
A photon takes thousands of years to travel from the center of the sun to the surface, and then 8 minutes to travel to earth. "Outside it shines, but inside it's already burned out" is the lyric that started this one. That and a big electric guitar riff!

I'm Fine

by Darin Jellison

Released 2016
Released 2016
Chill and introspective, from campfire and loons to distorted guitar.
NOTES
Loons calling out to each other inspired this song. What would that be like? What if I said "I'm fine," but I'm not really sure if it's true?

Coming Back Home

by Darin Jellison

Listen for the transformations, the careful little layered surprises hidden inside.

NOTES
in 2018, Chicago Music Guide described Phil Circle this way:
"What makes Circle one of the few ‘professional indie musicians’ (where the phrase isn’t an oxymoron) is not only his tenacity, but his inherent fluidity with performing, and a zen-like understanding of what it means to be a songwriter."
Veteran Chicago songwriter Phil Circle has been playing this local establishment, Uncommon Ground, since they opened in 1991. Since then, they've become one of the city's premier …
